IU #005: 7 Ways to Land Your Dream Remote Job

How to Start Your Data Career (In Your Pyjamas)

The past few years have taught me one thing. People love working in their pyjamas.

Ok, maybe I’ve learned more than that, but working from home is pretty great.

There are so many benefits.

You can travel the world, spend more time with your family, be healthier and avoid the daily commute.

But how do you find these remote jobs?

In this edition of Infinite Upside, I share 7 ways that you can land a remote job.

But first, I wanted to share a couple of exciting updates.

Firstly, my inbox is full of your results. I couldn’t believe how many of you landed your first job! Many more of you landed your first job interview and first call back from a recruiter.

Keep those updates coming. I LOVE to hear them!

You can find me in the LinkedIn comment section. I post free content there every day.

In other exciting news, I have launched career coaching services.

I can help you identify what is holding you back and help you overcome it. I can also help you fix your resume and LinkedIn networking strategy. Whatever you need.

My final update is my favourite.

I’ve added purchase power parity to ALL my e-books and coaching services. Everything will be discounted based on where you live.

For example, people in Mexico or Brazil will pay 40-50% less than the USA. People in India, Bangladesh and Nigeria will get 60-80% off.

Hopefully, this will make everything affordable to everyone. I’m so excited about this!

Let's dive in.

7 Ways to Land Your Dream Remote Job

1) Target the right companies:

Use LinkedIn search filters to find companies that offer remote opportunities.

Look for companies that already have remote workers or are open to remote work.

If companies mention a culture of flexibility, that could also mean remote work.

2) Build a remote-friendly profile:

Highlight your experience working remotely or independently in your LinkedIn profile and resume.

Emphasize your communication skills and ability to work effectively from a distance.

Share any relevant remote work or digital nomad experience front and centre.

3) Find the remote job listings:

Use LinkedIn Jobs to find remote job listings.

Filter your job search by location, or use keywords like "remote", “flexibility” or "work from home."

Don't forget to check these company websites directly too.

4) Connect with successful remote workers:

Find people who have successfully transitioned to remote work.

LinkedIn is a great place to find them. Ask for advice on how they found their remote job. This can save you so much time figuring it all out by yourself.

5) Check remote job websites:

Many companies hire remote workers through websites like Remote.co, FlexJobs, and We Work Remotely.

These websites highlight the companies that are open to remote work.

6) Tailor your portfolio:

Adapt your portfolio to show your ability to work remotely.

Include projects that involved a level of collaboration over video calls.

Emphasize how you got the work done despite being from a distance.

7) Negotiate remote work arrangements:

Ask for a trial period of working remotely for a day or two a week. If you live nearby, you could try to build up to 5 days remote over time.

At first, ask for a flexible remote work schedule, like working from home one week per month.

Negotiate something that works for everyone.

I hope this strategy helps you land a remote job.
